Jon Aspinall

In his own words

I have been interested in the art of photography from as long as I can remember, but my enthusiasm grew when I enrolled on the City & Guilds Photography Level One course in September 2010, and has not stopped growing since. Both the Level One and Level Two courses have been instrumental in sharpening my skills as a photographer, and feel the work I now produce is growing considerably stronger as time passes.

I did my first wedding in April of this year, which proved an important stepping stone in venturing into more projects with people at their heart. However, my main passion is street photography and the built environment. It is a rare occurrence these days for me to walk down the street and not attempt to see a building or situation from a range of different angles, and I am constantly looking at ways of interpreting what I see into a quality image.

I always considered Hulme a worthy place to photograph, and since moving here in July 2011 I have been working my way through its many parts, from new developments that have been popping-up of late, to the vestiges of a by-gone age that leave most photographers frothing at the mouth. I am particular proud of my series of mixed media collages, which I produced by blending what I deem ubiquitous images of Hulme with other media, such as the many scanned till receipts I have collected from my time shopping at Hulme ASDA. Layers play a massive role here, and I also have a liking for incorporating part of the process into the work itself.
